Democracies often face a tension between protecting individual freedoms and ensuring public safety. The brief asked us to express this tension through a current global issue by designing a campaign with typography as the main visual component.

Global displacement crisis is one of the clearest examples of this tension is the world . Due to wars and political tensions, people are forced to flee their home in search of a better life and a new identity. Meanwhile, getting citizenship in different countries is becoming harder and harder due to government legislation.

Reviewing refugees’ narratives, we found that gaining citizenship is a key part of their social integration. It goes beyond legal status and gives them a sense of belonging to the host society. Based on this insight, we designed the campaign “The Vanishing Point,” which highlights the hardships refugees face and the fundamental rights they are denied. The campaign allows people to explore refugees’ stories, express empathy by sending supportive messages, and sign a petition calling on governments to ease citizenship laws for refugees.

To define the typographic behavior we looked at passports as it's the official document that affords people protection, credibility and certifies our identity. The dot-based letters used in different pages of the passports inspired our type design process.

In addition, a punching effect – commonly used to invalidate passports – was applied to the letterforms to reflect the language of law and the concept of a void of legal recognition within the ideas explored in the campaign.
